Parody of A Modern Worship Service

Worship Blue Burst

I came across this video the other day on YouTube. It’s very well produced, but it’s so close to the truth it hurts! It made me think about what we are actually aiming to do in our worship.

So often in a church like ours we dream of being able to reproduce what bigger churches can do. Perhaps the video helps us to gain a bit of perspective?

What would success look like for our church?

Hey Bug – that’s a very good question! I’d love to hear what some of the FBC crowd think. What are we actually aiming for in our Sunday worship at FBC? Any comments?

Sorry should have commented before. I hope that we do not come across as the video! I for one appreciate the varied musical styles we use and also sometimes the quiet of things like the Prayer Labyrinths. Being more of an energetic if not ‘dramatic’ musician it is sometimes good for me to it still and appreciate God in the quiet! But is that worship?

Owch! But very true and also very popular with some people.
    Success from whose perspective?
I think we will know it when we see it!
Review a recent worship service: was Jesus at the centre? did it glorify God? did it help those present to get closer to God? did it witness to any non-christians present? did those present give more than they took from it? (things you could give include time, effort, energy, reputation, money, emotion, support, etc..) And are you already excited about the next worship service?!

Sorry, I didnt mean that critically, I suppose I mean success from our perspective – although that’s not to say that our perspective of successful worship can’t be to glorify God.

I guess another way of asking my question would be to ask; what do we want to happen, week on week, at our church? Sure we want Jesus at the centre, we want to glorify God, we want to give a helpful impression of church to non-Christians, and we want it to be an act of corporate giving – but that said, that still leaves a lot of room for variation doesn’t it? There are so many styles of worship, and we are so good at getting comfortable with one style, that its worth asking the question: is this the way we want to be doing it? Would we prefer to be a bit more old fashioned, or do more worship that isn’t singing, or maybe look a bit more like big charismatic churches in London?
