Knowing Me, Geoff: Knowing You, Jesus

Ask me what is the most important and wonderful and precious thing about my life. Go on, ask me! OK, OK, I’ll tell you. It’s knowing Jesus.

There are a few other people who are pretty important, like Sam and my daughters, and my mum and other relatives . . . and all of you, to be honest – it is a privilege and honour to serve as your pastor. But it’s knowing Jesus that really counts. Knowing that God loves me and has called me to himself. Knowing the Father who watches over me and cares for me. Knowing the Saviour who has come to find me and given up his life for me. Knowing the Spirit who teaches me and guides me. Knowing mercy, forgiveness, hope and peace.

Knowing you, Jesus, knowing you. It is the greatest thing.

Yes, God wants us to know him, and the Bible is his invitation to us:

Jeremiah 9:23-24
This is what the LORD says: “Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches, but let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,” declares the LORD.

John 17:2-3
For you granted [Jesus] authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.

Just two examples, of many. Do you see how vital this is? God the Father is longing for you to know him. And Jesus is the Way.

So I have a question: Do you know him?

If not, like Paul (in 2 Corinthians 5:20) I implore you, plead with you, urge you to do the most important thing you will ever do: Be reconciled to God.
