What is a Church Secretary?

Our next Church Meeting is on Thursday 17 November at 7.45pm, and once again will be open to all those regularly attending FBC, whether church members or not. One of the most important things we do at our church meetings is discern from God who we should appoint to leadership positions in the church. We currently have vacancies for a Deacon (with responsibility for our young people) and also, soon, for Church Secretary.

The function of Church Secretary is essential in the life of a Baptist church. The Church Officers (Secretary and Treasurer) have traditionally been seen as key roles within the church, and as such need to work closely with the Minister and provide a good foundation for church administration generally.

The Church Secretary takes responsibility for much of the work that goes on ’behind the scenes‘. The Secretary will usually know something about all the church‘s activities and fulfil a vital leadership and co-ordinating role. This is a vital part of the mission of the church and a good Secretary can help others to work effectively and avoid problems before they happen.

There are many tasks associated with being Church Secretary, including dealing with people, correspondence, meetings, the Minister and other Baptist and Christian groups. It is a demanding but not an impossible role! Many of the tasks can be shared between Deacons and members of the congregation, but someone does need to make sure they are all being done!

Please pray as we consider together who God is calling into leadership.
