Good Children’s Books

I note that the The Sunday Times Oxford Literary Festival starts today, presenting ‘the most impressive and prestigious programme yet staged’ – more than 550 speakers over 9 days at Christ Church, Corpus Christi and Merton Colleges.

Amongst everything that’s going on A C Grayling is launching his new work ‘THE GOOD BOOK A Secular Bible’ – collecting, editing re-arranging and organising the collective secular wisdom of the world in one volume.

Also four Children’s Laureates – Anthony Browne, Anne Fine, Michael Rosen and Jacqueline Wilson – will be launching the Festival’s Children’s Programme. This would definitely be my favourite part of the programme. I’m a big fan of Michael Rosen and I love Anthony Browne’s books.

I have not long finished reading through the entire Harry Potter series with my youngest, and we are looking for suggestions of good books for children (not written by Jacqueline Wilson). Any suggestions? What was your favourite book as a child? What is your all-time favourite children’s book? It would be great to hear some responses – feel free to comment!
