2011-07-26: Kolkata Daily Digest

  • 06.45 Up and running. Everyone in our room awake, getting ready for breakfast. The bus comes for us at 08.15 #
  • Read comments from back home over breakfast. Everyone encouraged – thanks for your messages. #
  • 08.00 First taste of GNCEM this morning. In a few minutes we get on the bus with dozens of children. Nervous but excited. That’s us not them! #
  • 10.00 At Hatibagan mobile school. Lesson time now after bus journey, wash, singing, story, breakfast and playtime. G is for goat . . . #
  • 11.30 Lunch (for the children). Subir and Enok, who head up GNCEM have arrived. #
  • 12.40 We’ve had a wonderful time at Hatibagan all morning:  singing, storytelling, helping with lessons and playing with the children. #
  • On returning to our room at BMS I discovered that Ollie had moved from where I’d left him. I do hope it was the cleaner, otherwise . . . #
  • . . . maybe he really isn’t just a puppet after all. #
  • 14.30 Team taking time to process our first experiences. Meeting Subir and Enok was inspirational. God is at work on the streets of Kolkata. #
  • Bethan, Emily and Sam were helping some of the older children with maths this morning. They say they had to work hard to keep up! #
  • 15.10 Soon we are going to Entally Baptist Girls Hostel. It will be good to see how things have progressed since I was last here. #
  • Everyone seems to be adjusting to the heat. Mid-thirties centigrade and no sign of rain yet (unlike last week apparently). #
  • 17.20 Off a little later than planned to Entally. In the jeep. Rather than the GNCEM 24 seater bus with about 56 of us this morning. #
  • 19.00 Heading back for dinner. Worn out from playing with the children -such a great time. #
  • Never was there a more enthusiastic Hokey-Cokey. And I’m trying to learn to sing ‘Shine From The Inside Out’ in Bengali. #
  • 21.00 Spent the last hour as Team Time. Praying and reading the Bible: are we ready to come to Jesus as we are and allow him to change us? #
  • Thanks for all the encouraging comments. We will post reactions to today’s experiences once we can sort out connection problems (again). #
  • For those following on Twitter, we are a team from @favbap visiting @BMSWorldMission partners in Kolkata. #
