2011-07-27: Kolkata Daily Digest

  • 07.00 Morning from Kolkata! #
  • 08.30 At Hatibagan mobile school again, having survived the journey. Not a 24 seater, a 19 seater with even more of us on board. #
  • 09.30 Ollie is being introduced to the children. He’s even picking up a bit of Bengali. #
  • 10.00 Chris is teaching the intermediate class. He’s drawn a splendid looking cat and is helping the children write the letters. #
  • The whole team is helping out in the classes. Yesterday, Paula took part of the class for younger children. #
  • 10.15 Now Debbie is taking the advanced class. #
  • And the cat is now sitting on the mat. #
  • Emily is teaching English numbers to the younger class. #
  • 11.15 Wow – these children have such life and energy! They are wearing us out with sheer enthusiasm. #
  • 12.15 Making our way back to BMS on foot – taxis weren’t interested – through the narrower streets and slums. Quite an eye-opener. #
  • Feels much hotter today, 35C and very high humidity. #
  • 14.00 After lunch, trying to upload blog posts about our experiences yesterday at Hatibagan and Entally. #
  • 14.30 Anu is taking the ladies shopping for clothes in the New Market. The men are tagging along. #
  • Change of plan. Not New Market. Looking for little presents for those left at home. #
  • Also shopping with us were some girls from the UK who are staying at BMS. One of them was at Uni with Huw, Paula’s son! #
  • After two days at the mobile school we will have a different sort of day tomorrow. #
  • We are discovering what an impact @BMSWorldmIssion partners in Kolkata are making. #
  • Listening to the Muslim call to prayer from the two mosques nearby. Reminds me it’s good to pray my way through the day. #
  • 21.45 Another good Team Time meeting this evening. Lots more reflection on two days at Hatibagan mobile school. #
  • We have more reactions to our time with the children and their wonderful teachers to post, but once again cannot connect. #
  • Unless I type it all out in bursts of 140 characters or less, which will take forever, it will have to be tomorrow. #
  • The tweets are getting through thanks to free 3G on my Kindle. And we are getting your encouraging comments. Thanks! #
