Day 12: Week 2 – Very Good Advice

I have come to the conclusion that the Bible is full of some of the most exciting and surprising stories ever. Many of the epic biblical battle scenes which depict rows and rows of armoured soldiers about to embark in a bloody fight could be taken straight out of ‘Lord Of The Rings’. On top of this, one of the most shocking things I have read in Genesis so far is the account of Lot’s daughters sleeping with their father in order to continue their family line – a plot line which would not be out of place in an episode of Eastenders! War and incest…how can anyone say the Bible is not interesting!? If you’ve never read the Bible, I can safely say there are parts of it which will really surprise you.

These shocking stories remind me how much times have changed and how different my culture is compared to Old Testament times. As a result, although these stories are interesting to read, I find them hard to relate to. The New Testament, on the other hand seems far more relevant. Matthew has been much easier to read than Genesis. Why? I think it must be because, so far, everything Jesus has said is relevant to everyday living. My everyday living, today, in 2014. Advice from over 2000 years ago is what I use as a guidebook for my life. It’s a crazy thought really. But do you know what? It works. Jesus manages to succinctly teach us how to live life to the full – I don’t know anyone else who has ever come close to being able to do this. Notice that I have described Jesus’ teachings as advice, not rules. In Matthew 6:26, Jesus tells us not to worry; this is not because we will be punished if we do, but because we will be much happier if we don’t. Listening to Jesus is a choice. I have chosen to listen to Him.
