The Guild

The Guild was initially formed around 1944 by the then Congregational Church in Newton Road as a weekly church activity on a Monday to offer fellowship to folk at the church in the form of entertainment and speakers on a range of topics, and also devotionals at appropriate times of the year. When the congregational church closed the Guild was offered a new home at The Methodist Church in Preston Street which later became the United Church - a coming together of The Methodist and United Reformed Churches.
The Guild has stood the test of time and the meetings are structured on alternate Monday afternoons from 2.30 pm - 4pm when speakers are invited to talk about their particular interests or issues (such as climate change) which affects us all. Membership is open to everyone.
We charge a weekly sub of £2 per person to include tea and biscuits. Our meetings usually open with prayer and a hymn, then we follow that with a talk by the visiting speaker which can vary in duration from 30 - 45 minutes. We close with another hymn and prayer followed by tea and biscuits and a time to socialise.
